EARTH ADVANTAGE INSTITUTE CERTIFIES FIRST CLASS OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE HOME PROFESSIONALSMay 26, 2009 Rigorous Coursework, Site Visits Expand Builders' Sustainable Home Knowledge, Cut CostsPORTLAND, Ore., May 26, 2009 - Earth Advantage Institute, a leading resource on sustainable construction that has certified more than 11,000 homes, announced today the graduation of the first group of professionals from its Sustainable Homes Professionals (SHP) certification class. The rigorous coursework and site visits enable builders, architects, inspectors, and others in the home building and evaluation market to gain the technical knowledge and tools needed to implement and assess sustainable building practices. The SHP class is part of Earth Advantage Institute's mission to expand sustainability knowledge in the built environment, as well as the processes needed to achieve it. The 12-day class - conducted over six months - is approved by the U.S. Green Building Council and is a registered program of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), enabling graduates to earn continuing education credits. Instructors are award-winning expert builders with extensive hands-on experience. Course content includes integrated design, envelope performance, mechanical systems, and health and resource efficiency. David Bonn, principal at Bonn Design, applied class knowledge to value-engineer the 12-home Juneberry Project planned by the Clackamas County Land Trust for Oregon City. The result increases shell efficiency and integrates the heating and ventilation systems, saving $3,600 per home and cutting the already minimal heating load by an additional 15%. "While many other certification programs 'broadbrush' their certification processes, this 96-hour course probes much deeper into the real-world criteria and what truly works in sustainability planning throughout the design and construction industry," said Rob Ruedy, president, Energy Transition Corporation and GeoSolar. "The class enhanced the value I can bring towards a specific multi-family development project that is moving through several milestones, including land use planning, improvements, build-out, design work, and project funding." "Earth Advantage Institute seeks to help homeowners and professionals in the home building industry provide long-term value through sustainability, and to help them communicate that value to all parties in the home industry ecosystem," said Sean Penrith, executive director for Earth Advantage Institute. "The SHP class offers a strong benefit to builders and design professionals through its rigor and the technical expertise provided by instructors."
