This interactive six-month program helps you develop the technical skills and knowledge required to design and build high performance homes. Each two-day module integrates lecture and discussion, hands-on exercises and tours of certified homes. Outside work includes homework assignments, readings and a final project that you can apply to real life. Our expert instructors have used building science and sustainability practices to construct award-winning homes, and they share pr actical tips that you will find nowhere else. A certification exam allows you to earn the designation of a Certified Sustainable Homes Professional. Earth Advantage Institute provides marketing support to help you gain visibility as an informed green professional.

Each module meets on a Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Can't commit to six months? Modules 2, 3, 4 and 5 can be taken as individual classes and each two-day module is approved for 14 continuing education hours for CCB elective credits or 14 learning units through the AIA's Continuing Education System. Each module includes expert instruction, student materials, and two site visits of third-party certified homes for a course fee of $295. Who can benefit? The Sustainable Homes Professional Certification course is designed for builders, remodelers, architects, designers, developers, inspectors, realtors, and other professionals who are eager for an expansive understanding of sustainable building practices and the processes needed to achieve them. Prerequisites Basic knowledge of residential construction and basic math skills are needed to take this class. Beginning level computer skills are also needed to compose and submit homework, access online quizzes, and participate in the online group forum. Continuing Education Credit
Instructor: David Heslam, Remodeling Program Manager, Earth Advantage Institute. Heslam owned and managed the residential general contracting firm Coho Construction Services, Inc., the first company to build a net-zero-energy home in Portland, Oregon. Heslam was a 2003 recipient of NAHB’s Custom Green Building Award for the Bacon-Brenes residence that employed a comprehensive green building strategy. A certified professional of the Building Performance Institute, David managed EAI’s involvement in the 2008 EPS Pilot Study and oversees the implementation of EPS methodology on a national level.
